The Associate Scientist – Lentiviral Vector Manufacture will work as part of an internal function for the generation and characterisation of viral vectors for both in-vitro and in-vivo applications (non-GMP). You will work with Scientist and Senior Scientist colleagues to expand this service within the company. This function sits within the Antibody & Viral Vector Manufacture Group, which addresses small scale (up to 200mL batches) and high-throughput production of lentiviral vectors, adeno-associated viral vectors (rAAVs) and adenoviral vectors.


You will work on commercial projects to deliver defined objectives, as well as on internal R&D projects to develop new technologies and platforms for future commercialisation. There will be frequent interactions and sometimes task sharing with Process Development group.

Key responsibilities:

  • With guidance and under supervision, contributing to the design and execution of experiments
  • Preparation of basic buffers, samples and reagents required for use in experiments
  • Providing experimental results analysis and project summaries
  • Presenting technical information, including analysis/results of experiments, to technical and non-technical audiences, both inside and outside the company
  • Supporting the writing of papers for publications through delivery of accurate and comprehensive data
  • Ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained in a good working condition
  • General housekeeping of laboratories
  • Maintaining laboratory cleanliness to OXGENE standards
  • Ensuring safe working practices in laboratory work areas
  • Communicating and co-ordinating activities with colleagues and management
  • Complying with the company’s Quality Management Systems

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum BSc in relevant discipline (Molecular Biology, Genetics or Cell Biology)
  • Demonstrable lab experience, ideally including mammalian cell culture techniques
  • Demonstrable molecular bilogy skills including PCR, RT-PCR and qRT-PCR
  • A high attention to detail
  • Excellent record-keeping skills
  • Ability to work in a laboratory under supervision and as part of a team on multiple projects, following established protocols, S.O.P.s and safety procedures
  • Good time management, communication, teamwork and numeracy skills

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience working in a commercial/industry environment is preferred but not essential
  • Handling and transfection of adherent cell lines in multiple formats (high throughput/multi-well plates, and hyperflasks/stacks)
  • Experience in production and characterisation of lentiviral vectors
  • Handling and transfection of suspension cell lines
  • Analytical techniques for genetic characterisation of viral particles such as IVCN (Integrated Vector Copy Number) qPCR
