We are looking for an Associate Scientist with a specific interest in promoter design and discovery to join our enthusiastic R&D team working in a rapidly expanding area of viral vectors for gene therapy. 


You will be part of a multi-disciplinary group of scientists developing tissue-specific promoters for viral gene therapy vectors. Working under the direction of the Senior Group Leader and other  members of the team, you will use the pioneering technologies developed at OXGENE to deliver research on viral design and discovery. Projects will be varied, and activities will span laboratory-based work, data collection and analysis, and presentation of research findings within the company. You will be expected to keep excellent laboratory records, and to work in a safe and responsible manner following standard operating practices and all safety guidelines. The incumbent should be able to work independently following instruction and training.


This position will particularly suit an individual with a broad interest in genomics, gene expression and transcription. You will be fully supported by the team and will receive on the job training.


Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and execution of experiments to a high standard.
  • Support the strategic direction of the group and promote the development and commercialisation of OXGENE technologies.
  • Research and development of viral vectors for gene therapy with a particular focus on the design of tissue-specific promoters and screening of promoter libraries
  • Analyse data, write reports, and present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Work to tight deadlines and provide accurate record keeping.
  • Actively engage in own career and skills development.
  • Keep up to date with advancements in the field.
  • Ensure that work complies with recommended Health and Safety Guidelines.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum of BSc in relevant discipline (Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics etc.) 
  • Experience in standard molecular biology techniques including restriction digestion, cloning techniques, PCR, and DNA purification
  • Must be able to work with viral vectors (adenovirus, lentivirus, AAV) and develop an understanding of viral vector biology
  • High-level attention to detail, and adherence to quality-related aspects
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team


Desirable criteria:

  • Standard mammalian cell culture techniques and handling of both adherent and suspension cells
  • Experience of protein analysis techniques including western blotting
  • A sound understanding of control of gene expression
  • Familiarity with DNA sequence analysis software
